This isn’t a new thing, but did you know about it? Many years ago, Howard Gardner introduced seven main intelligence types. Our learning system assumes we all are the same and the teaching methods are very uniform. This may be the reason why some people are unable to learn using the uniform ways. Find out what learning type you are and use the right tools and methods to learn much faster.
It seems hard to please all the different types. But if you think about it, incorporating different tools and multimedia can make the learning process easier.
This type thinks conceptually and abstractly. They need experimenting, questioning, solving puzzles, calculating, classify information. They are able to see and explore patterns. They learn through logic games, investigations, or mysteries. First thing this type of person has to learn are the basics and concepts, and then move to details.
This is my type of intelligence, but with a combination with linguistic type. I like to create my own projects and work on them at my own pace. I like reading and writing; I usually create my own “books” from actual books, which contain only the most important information.
This type needs self-placed projects, choices, some time alone in quiet places. They are shy, but in harmony with their inner feelings. They understand their goals and interests very well. These people have wisdom, intuition, and motivation. They have a good amount of strong will and confidence. They learn best through independent study using books, creative materials, privacy and time.
These people need some kind of body activity, role plays, drama, or hands-on learning. They can use the body effectively. They like movement, making things, and touching. They communicate well through body language. So, a good method for them is playing charades, or using real objects to learn vocabulary.
Visual types need art, drawing, visualizing, videos, moves, slides, imagination games, or illustrations. They like to draw, do jigsaw puzzles, read maps, daydream. They learn through drawings, verbal, and physical imagery. They can be good in imaginary dialogues technique. Include graphics, charts, photographs, drawings, or 3-D modeling into your learning process. You can also use video, videoconferencing, television, multimedia, texts with pictures/charts/graphs.
These learners learn through interaction with other people. They usually have many friends and empathy for others. To learn effectively, they need group and social activities, seminars, dialogues, or clubs. If you are this intelligence type, try to form a study group with your fellow classmates and practice through role-plays. Other methods include email, videoconferencing, or writing.
This type can use words very effectively. They need books, writing tools, dialogues, and discussion with classmates. They often think in words, so a good learning method is playing word games, writing exercises and talking.
They love music and need a sing-along activity. If you belong to this category, use a background music while you are studying. When trying to memorize something, try talking in lyrics or rhythmically.
This type is very comfortable outdoor. These people understand nature very well. They are good at sorting and classifying. Naturalists can learn through observing, comparing, making relations, reading stories (mostly nature-related), discovering things on trips (useful for learning vocabulary and describing objects).
So, what is your intelligence type? Does the description suit you?
